Meet Tony D.

Hello, my name is Tony D’Arezzo, and I’m running for Select Board because I can and will make a positive impact on our community. With a long career in Information Technology (IT), I have worked for small companies where every dollar mattered, midsized companies with diverse teams, and large corporations with their rules and bureaucracy. This experience has given me the skills and taught me the importance of researching the facts, listening to opposing opinions, and building consensus. It has also taught me that change is inevitable. You either plan for it or it rolls over you.

I chose a career in IT, because I am a technician at heart, and I love solving problems. Throughout my career, I have always worked in support of others. I know every choice has an impact, so I consider the decisions I make carefully. I am skilled at building a case in support of these decisions when presenting to my leadership team, colleagues and external consultants. This will serve me well on the Select Board. As the primary IT guy for over 200 employees, ranging from road technicians to the CEO, I have learned to focus on what is needed to successfully complete the task at hand, by working together despite differences in personalities, goals and interests.

I have been a town meeting member, on and off, for the last 30 years. Just like you, I have seen many fine people elected to public office and many more volunteering in service of the community. All of them have given their time and expertise to keep our town running. Their efforts have made our lives better.

This must be the goal of anyone in civil service - to improve the lives of their community, which includes understanding, like I do, that differing opinions and healthy debate are essential for progress. To be fit for a place on the Select Board, one cannot only be interested in pushing their personal agendas. If elected, I promise to represent not just those who voted for me, but also those who voted for my opponents, those who didn’t vote at all, and those unable to vote.

When it comes to leadership, I have a simple philosophy:

  • Protect the community: As someone capable of standing up for others and considering all sides of an argument, it is my duty to ensure everyone's voice is heard, everyone feels safe, and the necessary work of the town moves forward with little drama or distraction.

  • Preserve the character: There are many challenges facing the town, most of which are not unique to Reading. The solutions we develop must be a fit for Reading, not some cookie cutter, one size fits all response. We can resolve these challenges by working together while maintaining the town's character and adhering to our values.

  • Prepare for the future: We cannot be short sighted as we solve for today’s problems. The goal should be to include potential future issues in any solution. Positioning the town to be able to respond to future changes quickly and efficiently.

The mark of a good leader, is how they balance these objectives, when making decisions. â€‹

I am committed to leveraging all my skills and leadership experience to serve our town. I am committed to embracing change and envisioning a future where our community thrives. By voting for me, you are choosing a candidate who is relatable, experienced, and dedicated to making a positive impact through a spirit of service.

Let's work together to create a better future in Reading for everyone!

Thank you for your time.
